President Irfaan Ali has officially opened the new Yupukari Secondary School, marking a significant milestone for education in the Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo region. The inauguration took place during the president’s multi-day outreach to the area, underscoring the government’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities in hinterland communities.
The newly constructed school will serve approximately 200 students from Yupukari and neighboring villages such as Fly Hill, Quatata, and Kaicumbay. This development is expected to dramatically reduce the need for students to travel long distances or reside in dormitories at St. Ignatius Secondary School, providing greater access to quality education closer to home.
At the commissioning ceremony, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand highlighted the transformative impact of the government’s education agenda. She emphasized that investments in school infrastructure, trained teachers, learning materials, and daily meals are designed to ensure every child, regardless of location, has access to high-quality education. The minister noted that each student now receives a full set of textbooks for all subjects, from nursery through secondary, and that local women are employed to prepare breakfast and lunch for the children, further supporting community development.
The opening of Yupukari Secondary School follows the recent commissioning of Katoka Secondary School, reinforcing the administration’s focus on improving educational infrastructure across Region Nine. Community leaders and parents have welcomed the new school, expressing hope that it will inspire greater academic achievement and foster long-term development in the region.
President Ali’s visit and the school’s opening signal a new era for education in Yupukari and its satellite villages, promising brighter futures for generations of students.
