President Ali: Defectors Have Acknowledged Roles in ‘Dastardly’ Elections Act

    Published on

President Irfaan Ali has stated that several defectors from the opposition APNU+AFC coalition have privately acknowledged their roles in what he described as a “dastardly” act during Guyana’s controversial 2020 general elections. The president’s remarks come amid a wave of high-profile defections to the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), which has reshaped the country’s political landscape ahead of the 2025 elections.

Speaking on the sidelines of a recent event in Georgetown, President Ali emphasized that the PPP/C’s willingness to accept former opposition members stems from a philosophy of forgiveness and national unity. According to Ali, those crossing over have recognized that their previous actions were not in the best interest of Guyana and have chosen to align themselves with a party they believe is committed to democracy and the rule of law.

“Those who are now embracing a democratic force have acknowledged, in embracing that democratic force, that we were part of something that was not in the best interest of Guyana and many of them have spoken to us,” Ali said. He underscored that forgiveness is a process and that moving forward requires honesty about the past and a commitment to building a better future for all Guyanese.

Despite the president’s assertions, there is no public evidence that any of the defectors have openly admitted to participating in or supporting electoral wrongdoing. Notable recent defectors include former APNU+AFC Vice President Sydney Allicock, Region Four Chairman Daniel Seeram, and former PNC Executive James Bond. While these figures have publicly endorsed the PPP/C and its vision for Guyana, none have made explicit public admissions regarding their roles in the disputed 2020 elections.

The influx of defectors has sparked debate within Guyanese political circles. Critics argue that some are motivated by the prospect of political advantage rather than genuine contrition or ideological alignment. President Ali, however, dismissed suggestions that these moves are driven by opportunism, insisting that the PPP/C’s philosophy is about inclusivity and putting Guyana first.

PPP/C General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo echoed these sentiments, stating that anyone is welcome to join the party, provided they respect the law and the party’s values. He also addressed concerns about double standards, noting that individuals should not be vilified solely for changing their political allegiance.

As Guyana prepares for its next general election in September, the issue of political accountability and the legacy of the 2020 electoral crisis remain at the forefront of national discourse. The president’s comments signal an ongoing effort by the PPP/C to present itself as a unifying force, even as questions linger about the true motivations and accountability of those crossing the political aisle.
