President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali has unveiled ambitious plans to expand the University of Guyana’s (UG) Tain Campus, a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing educational opportunities for residents of Berbice and surrounding regions. The announcement was made during a public engagement in Region Six, where the president outlined his government’s vision for equitable access to higher education.
The expansion project is expected to significantly increase the campus’s capacity, enabling more students to pursue tertiary education without having to relocate to Georgetown. According to President Ali, this move aligns with the government’s broader strategy of decentralizing educational services and fostering regional development.
“This expansion is not just about constructing buildings; it’s about creating opportunities for every young person in Berbice and beyond,†President Ali stated. “Education is the foundation of our nation’s progress, and we are committed to ensuring that no one is left behind.â€
The upgraded Tain Campus will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including modern lecture halls, research laboratories, and digital learning resources. It will also introduce new programs tailored to meet the needs of the region, such as agricultural sciences, engineering, and information technology.
This initiative forms part of the government’s larger investment in education, which includes the recently commissioned US$4.57 million College of Medical Sciences building at UG’s Turkeyen Campus. President Ali emphasized that these efforts are designed to position Guyana as a hub for world-class education while preparing its citizens for the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy.
Community leaders and educators in Berbice have welcomed the announcement, noting that the expanded campus will address long-standing challenges such as limited access to higher education and skills training in rural areas. “This is a game-changer for our region,†one educator remarked. “It will empower our youth and contribute to the overall development of Berbice.â€
The government has yet to disclose a timeline for the project’s completion but has assured residents that work will begin promptly. As part of his outreach in Region Six, President Ali reiterated his administration’s commitment to bridging educational gaps and fostering inclusive growth across Guyana.
The expansion of UG’s Tain Campus represents another step forward in realizing the president’s vision of equitable access to education for all Guyanese. For Berbice residents, it signals hope for a brighter future driven by knowledge and opportunity.
