The Alliance for Change (AFC) has issued a blistering statement condemning what it describes as a dangerous pattern of racial insult, voter suppression, and electoral obstruction by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration—just days before Guyana’s highly anticipated General and Regional Elections on September 1st, 2025.
AFC Rejects AG’s “Proud House Slave” Comment, Says Apology Is Insulting
The AFC strongly rejected Attorney General Anil Nandlall’s recent comments referring to national hero Cuffy as a “proud house slave” and likening African Guyanese supporters of the PPP to the same. The party said the statement is not only historically inaccurate but also deeply disrespectful to the memory of enslaved Africans and to the dignity of today’s African Guyanese.
“To claim that Africans could be enslaved and still be happy, proud, or upstanding is an insult of the highest order — a final indignity to the memory of our ancestors and to every African Guyanese today,” the party declared.
In rejecting what they described as a hollow and insincere apology from Nandlall, the AFC said:
“This so-called apology is neither sincere nor acceptable. If it was intended as one, it is rejected in the strongest possible terms.”
They called on all African Guyanese to take note of how they are viewed by the PPP leadership and vote accordingly:
“Every clear-thinking Black Guyanese should see clearly how they are viewed by the current administration and show their displeasure by voting strongly on Monday, September 1st to get the PPP/C out of office.”
Indigenous Guyanese Left Stranded in Savannah – “Fear Stalks This Land”
The AFC also sounded the alarm over the disturbing treatment of Indigenous citizens who were reportedly kicked off a bus in the Rupununi Savannah because they were en route to a WIN (We Invest in Nationhood) political rally.
Calling the incident appalling and undemocratic, the AFC stated:
“This is not only an attack on democracy but shows the levels at which this administration will go to victimize businesses and any Guyanese who dare to oppose them.”
Images and audio from the incident went viral on social media, further sparking public outrage. The party noted that the incident serves as further proof that the President’s “One Guyana” slogan rings hollow in reality:
“This is not the ‘One’ Guyana that the President speaks about, but clearly shows the reality of the two Guyanas in which we live – One for the rich and powerful and the other for the poor and marginalized.”
The AFC is urging all Guyanese to turn this betrayal into action at the polls:
“Our Guyanese brothers and sisters deserve to live in a country with dignity and free of fear. Better Must Come and Will Come with your support of the Alliance for Change come September 1st.”
AFC Denounces GECOM Over Blocking of Party Agents – But Decision Reversed After Pressure
Adding to its list of grievances, the AFC condemned the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) for initially refusing to grant accreditation to polling agents from the AFC, WIN, Forward Guyana Movement (FGM), and the African Liberation Party (ALP), preventing them from monitoring the upcoming elections.
“This blatant denial undermines transparency and strikes at the very heart of free and fair elections. No electoral process can be certified as credible when political parties are blocked from scrutinizing the poll.”
The AFC warned that such a move could only be interpreted as an attempt to interfere with the results of the election.
However, amidst mounting public backlash, condemnation from civil society, and direct intervention from international observer missions, GECOM has since reversed its decision, granting accreditation to the affected parties.
