Prime Minister Mark Phillips has launched a groundbreaking Information and Communication Technology (ICT) training programme aimed at empowering community leaders and accelerating digital inclusion across Guyana. The initiative, unveiled during a special ceremony in Georgetown, is part of the government’s ongoing commitment to bridging the digital divide and fostering technological advancement in every region.
Addressing a diverse audience of regional officials, community representatives, and ICT professionals, Prime Minister Phillips emphasized the critical role of digital skills in modern governance and community development. “In today’s world, digital literacy is not a luxury—it is a necessity,” the Prime Minister stated. “By equipping our community leaders with ICT skills, we are ensuring that every citizen, regardless of where they live, can participate in and benefit from Guyana’s digital transformation.”
The training programme, which will be rolled out in all ten administrative regions, is designed to provide leaders with practical skills in computer literacy, internet navigation, cybersecurity, and the use of digital tools for communication and service delivery. Participants will also learn how to leverage technology to improve community engagement, streamline administrative processes, and access government services online.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Office of the Prime Minister, the National Data Management Authority, and several international partners. Trainers will travel to remote and hinterland communities, ensuring that even the most underserved areas receive the knowledge and resources needed to thrive in the digital age.
Community leaders welcomed the programme, noting that it will help them better serve their constituents and foster greater connectivity and opportunity. “This training will allow us to bring vital information and services closer to our people,” said one regional representative. “It’s a step forward for our communities and for Guyana as a whole.”
The ICT training programme is expected to reach hundreds of leaders over the coming months, laying the foundation for a more inclusive, digitally empowered society. The government has pledged to continue investing in digital infrastructure and education, reaffirming its vision of a future where every Guyanese can access the opportunities of the digital world.
