Ogle to Eccles Highway Set to Transform Connectivity, Ease Congestion

    Published on

The soon-to-be-completed Ogle to Eccles Highway is poised to revolutionize travel between the East Coast and East Bank of Demerara, promising to significantly reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity for thousands of commuters. Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, has highlighted the project as a cornerstone of Guyana’s infrastructure modernization efforts.

    A Modern Thoroughfare

The Ogle to Eccles Highway spans approximately 7.8 kilometers and features four lanes separated by a central median. Designed with sidewalks and multiple connector roads, the highway aims to provide safe and efficient access for both vehicles and pedestrians. The route links the Ogle Airstrip Road and Rupert Craig Highway on the East Coast directly to Haags Bosch in Eccles on the East Bank, allowing travelers to bypass Georgetown’s busy city center.

    Enhanced Airport Access

One of the highway’s standout benefits is its improved connectivity between the Eugene F. Correia International Airport and the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. The direct route will streamline both domestic and international travel, reducing journey times and enhancing the overall travel experience for residents and visitors alike.

    Economic and Social Benefits

The highway is expected to open up vast areas of land for housing, agriculture, and commercial development, supporting Guyana’s growing population and economic ambitions. Enhanced infrastructure will benefit key sectors, including housing, agriculture, and the burgeoning oil and gas industry, while also attracting new investment to the region.

Local communities have welcomed the project, noting the careful planning and minimal disruption during construction. The government’s engagement with residents has helped ensure that the highway meets the needs of those it is designed to serve.

    Looking Ahead

With the Ogle to Eccles Highway scheduled for completion in early 2025, plans are already underway to extend the route further to Diamond and eventually to Timehri. This future expansion aims to create a seamless corridor from the East Coast to Guyana’s main international airport, further enhancing mobility and economic opportunity.

As the highway nears completion, anticipation is building for the positive changes it will bring to daily life, business, and the broader development of Guyana.
