Nurses stand at the heart of Guyana’s healthcare system, playing an indispensable role in ensuring the delivery of quality care to every citizen. This was the central message from Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony, who recently underscored the critical contributions of nurses in advancing the nation’s health outcomes.
Dr. Anthony highlighted that nurses are often the first point of contact for patients and their families, providing not only medical care but also emotional support and health education. Their presence is especially vital in maternal and child health, where skilled nursing care has been instrumental in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. Over the past five years, Guyana has made significant progress in decreasing maternal deaths, a success Dr. Anthony attributes in part to the dedication and training of nurses and midwives.
The Ministry of Health has invested heavily in the professional development of nurses, with hundreds receiving advanced training in prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care. Initiatives such as the Zero Deaths by Haemorrhage programme and continuous medical education have equipped nurses with the skills needed to respond to emergencies and provide high-quality care across urban and rural regions. The government’s commitment is further reflected in the construction of new hospitals and the expansion of neonatal intensive care units, ensuring that nurses have the resources and environments necessary to deliver world-class care.
Dr. Anthony also pointed to the ongoing collaboration with international partners, which has brought modern technology, telemedicine, and innovative training programmes to Guyana’s health sector. These advancements have enabled nurses to extend their reach, particularly in remote hinterland communities, where access to healthcare can be challenging.
The Health Minister emphasized that investing in nurses is investing in the future of Guyana’s healthcare. As the country continues to expand and modernize its health services, the role of nurses will only become more crucial. Dr. Anthony called on all stakeholders to support the nursing profession, recognizing that the path to universal, high-quality healthcare depends on the strength, compassion, and expertise of nurses.
As Guyana moves forward with its ambitious health sector expansion, nurses will remain the backbone of the system, ensuring that every individual receives the care and dignity they deserve.
