The newly constructed Yupukari Secondary School has been officially commissioned, marking a significant milestone in Guyana’s drive to provide equitable education across its hinterland regions. President Dr. Irfaan Ali led the opening ceremony, joined by government officials, educators, and community members, all celebrating a transformative step for local youth.
The school is set to serve approximately 200 students from Yupukari and neighboring communities, including Fly Hill, Quatata, and Kaicumbay. For the first time, children in these areas will have access to a full secondary education programme close to home, eliminating the need for long commutes or boarding at distant institutions such as St. Ignatius Secondary School.
Minister of Education Priya Manickchand emphasized the government’s commitment to bridging educational gaps between the coastland and hinterland. She highlighted investments not only in modern infrastructure, but also in trained teachers, comprehensive learning materials, and daily meals for students. “Now, every child has all the textbooks they need for every subject, from nursery through secondary. Breakfast and lunch are provided, prepared by women from the village, ensuring that support stays within the community,” the Minister stated during the ceremony.
The $22.5 million school, constructed by contractor Clyve King through a transparent bidding process, is part of a broader strategy to expand educational opportunities in Region Nine. The commissioning of Yupukari Secondary School follows the opening of Katoka Secondary School on the same day, reflecting the administration’s focus on rapidly increasing access to quality education. In just five years, the region has seen the addition of seven new secondary schools, creating 2,500 new seats and opening pathways for students to progress from Grade Nine to CXC and on to university.
Parents and local leaders have welcomed the new facility as a beacon of hope, expected to improve academic outcomes and reduce dropout rates. The school offers a nurturing and well-resourced environment, allowing students to thrive without the burden of relocation or extensive travel.
The opening of Yupukari Secondary School stands as a testament to Guyana’s commitment to leaving no child behind, ensuring that every community, regardless of its location, has access to the tools and opportunities necessary for a brighter future.
