Residents of East La Penitence in Georgetown are poised to benefit from a new recreational facility, as the government moves forward with plans to create a vibrant community hub. The initiative comes in response to requests from local residents eager for a safe and dedicated area for sports and social activities.
Construction is scheduled to begin immediately, with a tarmac surface being laid to support a variety of sporting events, including tennis and basketball. The new facility aims to provide children—who previously played football and cricket in the streets—with a safer environment for recreation. Community member Lin Toney expressed excitement about the development, noting that it will offer meaningful engagement opportunities for both children and adults.
Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, announced the project during a recent consultation with residents. He emphasized the government’s commitment to delivering the facility, stating that work would commence without delay. In addition to sports, the space is designed to accommodate health fairs, community markets, and other neighborhood events.
Recent road upgrades in East La Penitence have already improved mobility for residents, and the new recreational space is expected to further enhance the quality of life in the area. To ensure the facility’s upkeep and effective use, a community development group will be established to oversee its management.
The project reflects the government’s broader commitment to fostering safe, inclusive, and well-maintained public spaces that support community well-being and social cohesion.
