The Guyana Police Force has destroyed more than $810 million worth of cannabis during three major eradication exercises conducted along the Wiruni Creek and Wiruni Savannahs in the Upper Berbice River, Region 10.
On Tuesday, a team from the Force’s Narcotics Branch carried out a four-hour operation along Wiruni Creek, where they discovered a five-acre cannabis farm containing approximately 2,000 plants ranging from two to five feet in height.
A short distance from the cultivation site, officers also found a makeshift camp and a drying area. Upon inspection, the team uncovered around 580 pounds of dried cannabis. The entire camp, along with the drying area and cannabis plants, was subsequently destroyed by fire.
The estimated value of the marijuana plants is $677,600, while the dried cannabis is valued at approximately $236.8 million. No arrests were made during the operation, and investigations are ongoing.
In a separate exercise conducted in the Wiruni Savannahs, officers discovered an eight-acre plot of land being prepared for marijuana cultivation. Similar to the first operation, another makeshift camp and drying area were found nearby, containing roughly 1,400 pounds of dried cannabis.
Further searches of the camp led to the discovery of a 12-gauge shotgun without a serial number and nine matching cartridges. The firearm and ammunition have been taken for forensic testing.
The dried cannabis and the camp were also destroyed by fire. The estimated street value of the drugs seized and destroyed in this second operation exceeds $571 million. Police investigations continue.
In another incident, a team of policemen, between 16:00hrs and 18:00hrs, along the Wiruni Creek, Upper Berbice River, came across a plot of land measuring about three acres was discovered. The plot of land contained about 10,000 cannabis plants ranging from two to five feet in height. The plants were all destroyed by fire. The narcotics plants had a valued of $3,388,000.
