Major traffic changes have been announced for the East Bank Demerara corridor as rehabilitation works intensify along the Diamond to Good Success stretch of roadway. Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, revealed the new traffic management plan during a site visit, emphasizing the need to ease congestion and ensure safety while construction is underway.
New Traffic Arrangements
Under the updated plan, only trucks, heavy-load vehicles, and public transportation will be permitted to use the main Diamond to Good Success Public Road. All private vehicles, including cars and SUVs, are now being diverted onto specially constructed bypass roads. These bypasses, accessible from Heroes Highway and Jimbo Bridge, have been established to minimize disruptions and keep traffic moving efficiently during the construction phase.
Project Scope and Progress
The road rehabilitation project is part of a broader, US$75.8 million initiative aimed at upgrading national infrastructure and improving transport efficiency along one of Guyana’s busiest corridors. More than 30,000 vehicles use the East Bank public road daily, with trucks accounting for up to 30 percent of that volume. The current works, which are about 45 percent complete, involve extensive excavation and the use of heavy-duty machinery to widen lanes, strengthen the road base, and improve shoulders for parking.
Community and Enforcement
Minister Edghill stressed that these diversions are temporary but necessary to facilitate the smooth progress of the project and reduce risks in this high-traffic zone. The Ministry of Public Works has coordinated with the Guyana Police Force to enforce the new restrictions and ensure motorists follow all posted signs and advisories. Property owners along the route will continue to have access during the works, thanks to collaboration with local Neighbourhood Democratic Councils.
Looking Ahead
The East Bank Road project is expected to significantly enhance travel for commuters, businesses, and visitors alike once completed. Authorities have thanked the public for their patience and cooperation and urge all road users to adhere strictly to the new traffic arrangements for the duration of the works.
