Minister of Natural Resources, Hon. Vickram Bharrat, accompanied by a high-level team from the Ministry and affiliated agencies, has arrived in Bartica to advance critical discussions and initiatives aimed at strengthening the region’s natural resources sector and supporting local communities.
The visit underscores the government’s commitment to sustainable management of Guyana’s rich natural resources, with a particular focus on mining, forestry, and the ongoing drive to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship. Minister Bharrat, known for his hands-on approach and deep expertise in governance and strategic leadership, is spearheading engagements with stakeholders across the mining town and its surrounding communities.
During his tenure, Minister Bharrat has prioritized tackling longstanding challenges in the mining sector, including illegal mining and the need for transparent land allocation. Recent reforms, such as the introduction of lottery systems for mining claims in regions including Bartica, have significantly reduced illegal mining activities and improved access for small miners. Over the past three years, more than 1,000 small Guyanese miners have benefited from these changes, gaining legal access to mining lands and reducing conflicts over property rights.
Infrastructure development remains a central theme of the Ministry’s agenda. The government has invested in new facilities, such as the soon-to-be-completed Aranka Mining Station, which will enhance monitoring and support for mining and forestry operations in the wider Region Seven area. This facility will be equipped with modern vehicles and resources to ensure effective oversight and assistance for local miners.
Minister Bharrat’s visit also comes at a time of notable improvements in the performance of Guyana’s natural resources sector. The gold and bauxite industries have seen significant growth, while the forestry sector has achieved international certification for legality and sustainability. These achievements have bolstered investor confidence and attracted new investments, particularly in mining and quarrying, which remain vital contributors to the national economy.
In his recent public statements, Minister Bharrat has emphasized the importance of ensuring that local demand for resources such as timber and aggregates is met, even as the country continues to pursue export opportunities. The Ministry is also addressing the challenge of opening new mining areas and maintaining infrastructure to support increased production, a key concern for miners in Bartica and beyond.
The delegation’s presence in Bartica is expected to foster dialogue with local stakeholders, address community concerns, and reinforce the government’s vision for a sustainable and prosperous future. As Guyana continues to navigate the complexities of resource extraction and environmental preservation, Minister Bharrat’s leadership and the Ministry’s proactive initiatives are setting the stage for balanced, inclusive development in one of the country’s most resource-rich regions.
