Major Investment Announced to Expand Aviation Education in Guyana

    Published on

President Dr. Irfaan Ali has unveiled an ambitious plan to significantly expand aviation education in Guyana, signaling a new era for the country’s rapidly growing aviation sector. The announcement was made during the launch of KLM Dutch Airlines’ new service to Guyana, where the President outlined a vision to train professionals across all facets of the aviation industry.

According to President Ali, the forthcoming investment will support the creation of comprehensive local training programs for pilots, aviation managers, aeronautical engineers, and other key roles. “Very soon, we will invest here in Guyana in expanding aviation education—in every aspect of aviation. Aviation management, training of pilots, aeronautical engineers—every single sphere of aviation life will be part of the training programme we want to offer here in Guyana,†he stated.

The President highlighted the remarkable growth of the aviation sector in recent years, noting a sharp increase in passenger traffic and international connectivity. Over the past four years, the number of airlines serving Guyana has more than doubled, and the country is now connected to sixteen destinations, up from just six. Seat capacity has soared from 336,000 to nearly 1.5 million, reflecting growing confidence in Guyana’s economy and its strategic importance as a regional hub.

To accommodate the projected increase in passenger traffic—expected to reach three million by 2030—President Ali emphasized the need for an “ecosystem†that can support such expansion. This includes not just infrastructure, but also a highly skilled workforce trained to international standards.

The initiative is part of a broader government commitment to modernize Guyana’s education and economic landscape. By investing in aviation education, the administration aims to create new opportunities for young Guyanese, strengthen the country’s role in regional and global air transport, and ensure sustainable growth for years to come.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, viewing it as a critical step toward building a world-class aviation sector and positioning Guyana as a key player in the Caribbean and South American aviation markets.
