The Ministry of Labour has intensified its oversight of workplace safety with a series of inspections and accident investigations at major facilities along the East Bank of Demerara. The latest operations targeted Pritipaul Singh Investments Inc. and the National Milling Company of Guyana (NAMILCO), two of the region’s largest employers.

Focus on Occupational Safety and Health

A team from the Ministry’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department, including OSH Officers Ray Hosannah and Delcina Small, along with University of Guyana student interns, led the inspections. Their mandate was to assess compliance with safety regulations, investigate recent workplace accidents, and engage directly with employees on best practices for accident prevention and hazard reporting.

Key Inspection Activities

• Accident Investigations: The team reviewed recent incidents, including those resulting in serious injury or fatality, to determine causes and recommend preventative measures.
• Safety Protocols: Officers checked for the presence and adequacy of first aid kits, fire extinguishers, potable water, and hygienic restroom facilities for all genders.
• Document Review: Inspectors examined workplace records such as the Accident Register, OSH Policy, and HIV/AIDS Policy to ensure they were up to date and properly displayed.
• Employee Engagement: Workers received guidance on fall protection, safe equipment use, and the importance of promptly reporting hazards. Management was given detailed recommendations and a one-month grace period to address any breaches.

Responding to Recent Accidents

The Ministry’s stepped-up inspections come in response to a recent surge in workplace accidents, including a fatal incident involving a 19-year-old porter in Georgetown and a previous accident at Pritipaul Singh Investments. These tragedies have underscored the need for stricter compliance and ongoing safety education within the sector.

The Labour Ministry has reiterated its commitment to continuous engagement with businesses through regular inspections, safety talks, and distribution of informational materials. OSH officers have the authority to enter and examine any industrial establishment at any time, ensuring that safety standards are consistently upheld across the country.
