As Guyana commemorated Arrival Day 2025, President Dr. Irfaan Ali reaffirmed that inclusive development and shared prosperity remain at the forefront of the nation’s agenda. In a passionate address to the nation, President Ali called for unity, cultural pride, and the equitable distribution of Guyana’s growing wealth, urging all citizens to honour the sacrifices of their foreparents while building a future where every Guyanese feels a sense of belonging.
Reflecting on the legacy of indentured immigrants-especially the East Indian community whose arrival 187 years ago laid the foundation for modern Guyana-President Ali emphasized that this year’s observance is not just about remembering the past, but about recommitting to a future where all Guyanese, regardless of race, heritage, religion, or background, have an equal stake in the nation’s progress.
“No heritage must feel hidden. No voice must feel unheard,†President Ali declared, highlighting Guyana’s multiculturalism as its greatest strength. He addressed the global rise in xenophobia and cultural erasure, urging Guyanese to cherish and uplift one another rather than succumb to division and discrimination.
Central to his message was the principle that prosperity must be a right, not a privilege. “Prosperity must not be a privilege-it must be a right… It is a bounty that must be shared equitably and sustainably,†the President stated, calling for every community and ethnic group-Indigenous peoples, African-Guyanese, Indo-Guyanese, and those of European, Portuguese, Chinese, and mixed descent-to be equally recognized and respected.
President Ali’s vision for Guyana is one where “every community has a voice, and every citizen has a place at the table.†He called on the nation to move forward together, united and determined to ensure that no one is made to feel like a stranger in their own land.
As Guyana continues to experience economic growth and transformation, the commitment to inclusive development and shared prosperity is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic priority for building a resilient, cohesive, and prosperous society. The President’s address serves as a reminder that Guyana’s strength lies in its diversity and its unwavering pursuit of a future where everyone belongs.
