Guyana’s President Applauds Border Defenders as Venezuela Stirs Controversy

    Published on

President Dr. Irfaan Ali has paid tribute to the courage and patriotism of Guyana’s border communities and the soldiers stationed there, as the nation faces renewed threats from neighbouring Venezuela over the Essequibo region.

Speaking at the opening of the 2025 National Toshaos Council (NTC) Annual Conference at the Arthur Chung Conference Center, President Ali commended residents—especially those in indigenous and border communities—for their vigilance and steadfastness in upholding Guyana’s sovereignty. “I want to thank all of you, especially those who live in the border communities, for your vigilance, for your strong protection, for your patriotism, for your strength of character, for you who stand up every day on the border, raising our Golden Arrowhead high and strong,” he said.

The President also saluted the men and women in uniform serving at the nation’s borders, acknowledging their critical role in defending Guyana’s territorial integrity. He called for a round of applause to send a message of support and solidarity to the soldiers deployed in these sensitive regions.

Ali’s remarks come as Venezuela continues to assert illegal claims over Guyana’s Essequibo territory, including plans to hold a controversial election for a so-called “Governor” of the region—a move widely condemned by the international community and subject to an International Court of Justice (ICJ) order prohibiting such actions. The President reassured border residents and the wider public that the government, along with the Guyana Defence Force and international partners, is fully committed to monitoring the situation and safeguarding the nation’s borders.

He also expressed gratitude to Guyana’s international allies, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, European Union, and India, for their vocal support of Guyana’s sovereignty and the rule of law. “You hold a special place in the heart of Guyana, and every Guyanese,” Ali said.

NTC Chairman Derek John echoed the President’s sentiments, calling on the international community to continue standing with Guyana in the face of Venezuela’s threats and expressing confidence in the government’s plans to protect all citizens.

Despite the ongoing controversy and Venezuela’s defiance of international rulings, President Ali reiterated his confidence in the legal process and assured citizens that every necessary measure is being taken to ensure peace, security, and the protection of Guyana’s territorial rights.
