Guyana is set to dispatch a high-level trade delegation to Japan this month, aiming to deepen economic ties and unlock new investment opportunities across a range of sectors. The mission, led by the Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest) in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, will coincide with Guyana’s participation at Expo 2025 in Osaka.
The delegation will include senior government officials and private sector leaders, all focused on promoting Guyana’s rapidly expanding economy and showcasing its potential as a destination for Japanese investment. Key areas of interest include energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and technology, reflecting Guyana’s ambition to diversify its economy and build on its recent oil-driven growth.
Business-to-business matchmaking sessions have been arranged between Guyanese and Japanese companies, providing a platform for direct engagement and fostering partnerships that could drive bilateral trade to new heights. Guyana’s pavilion at Expo 2025 is already generating significant buzz, offering visitors an immersive experience of the nation’s rich biodiversity, innovative development projects, and commitment to sustainability.
Trade between Guyana and Japan has seen robust growth in recent years. In 2024, Japan exported nearly $184 million worth of goods to Guyana, with vehicles, machinery, and technical apparatus among the top categories. Guyana’s exports to Japan, while smaller, have also increased, led by aluminum ore, other minerals, and select agricultural products.
The Guyanese delegation will also focus on attracting Japanese investment in renewable energy, infrastructure modernization, and value-added manufacturing. With the country’s Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030 and major projects like the Amaila Falls Hydropower Project on display, Guyana is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable development and a promising partner for Japanese businesses seeking to expand in South America.
Officials say the visit underscores Guyana’s commitment to economic diplomacy and its readiness to seize new opportunities on the global stage. As the Expo continues through October, Guyana’s presence in Japan is expected to yield tangible results in trade, investment, and cultural exchange, further strengthening ties between the two nations.
