Guyana Showcases Indigenous Tourism and Earns International Recognition at WTM Latin America

    Published on

Guyana took center stage at the World Travel Market (WTM) Latin America 2025, held at Expo Center Norte in São Paulo, Brazil, from April 14 to 16. The country impressed global tourism professionals and industry leaders with its unique approach to community-led, sustainable tourism—particularly its initiatives supporting indigenous communities.

This year, Guyana was awarded silver in the “Best Initiatives for Indigenous Communities and/or Traditional Communities†category at the WTM Latin America Responsible Tourism Awards. The accolade recognizes Guyana’s commitment to empowering its indigenous peoples, who own and manage their tourism assets, ensuring that profits and opportunities remain within their communities.

Representatives from the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) highlighted the nation’s successful model of indigenous tourism, which sets it apart from other destinations. The GTA’s approach involves working closely with village leaders to develop tourism products that showcase local talent, such as pottery and painting, and to create immersive experiences for visitors. These efforts have led to increased employment, economic growth, and cultural preservation in indigenous villages.

The government’s support through grants, such as those from the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) and Presidential Grants, has enabled communities to build guest houses, kitchens, and acquire vehicles, further enhancing tourism infrastructure in remote areas.

Guyana’s presence at WTM Latin America not only celebrated its achievements but also invited new partnerships and investment, positioning the country as a leader in sustainable and responsible tourism in the region. The event drew nearly 30,000 visitors and hundreds of exhibitors, providing Guyana with a valuable platform to share its story and attract travelers seeking authentic, nature-based experiences.
