The Government of Guyana, in collaboration with the World Bank, has officially launched the US$22 million Guyana One Health Project, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s health resilience and preparedness for future health emergencies.
The project, approved by the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors, adopts a comprehensive One Health approach that integrates human, animal, and environmental health systems. This holistic strategy recognizes the interconnectedness of these sectors in addressing public health challenges.
Key components of the Guyana One Health Project include:
- Modernizing and Integrating Surveillance Systems:
- Upgrading to digital, real-time platforms
- Establishing regional surveillance units nationwide
- Improving disease monitoring at points of entry
- Enhancing Laboratory Capabilities:
- Transforming the National Public Health Reference Laboratory
- Expanding veterinary and wildlife diagnostic capacity
- Ensuring weather-resilient and energy-efficient facilities
- Strengthening the Health Workforce:
- Training a new generation of health professionals
- Focusing on laboratory scientists and port health officers
- Including training on gender-based violence support
- Addressing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR):
- Implementing strategies to combat the growing threat of AMR
- Promoting responsible antibiotic use
- Improving Public Awareness:
- Launching campaigns across communities, schools, and the private sector
- Promoting good hygiene practices and safe interactions with wildlife and livestock
The project is financed through a US$15 million grant from the Pandemic Fund and a US$7 million credit from the World Bank’s International Development Association. This funding is expected to catalyze additional investments and co-financing, significantly boosting Guyana’s health sector.
Diletta Doretti, World Bank Group Representative for Guyana, emphasized the critical link between a healthy society and economic growth, stating that the project directly contributes to the nation’s productivity and long-term prosperity.
The Guyana One Health Project builds upon previous health initiatives, including the successful COVID-19 Emergency Response Project. It represents a significant step forward in Guyana’s commitment to modernizing its health infrastructure and ensuring the country is better prepared to prevent, detect, and respond to future health threats.
