Guyana Develops Infrastructure to Withstand Climate Change Impacts

    Published on

Guyana is taking proactive steps to develop infrastructure that can withstand the impacts of climate change, according to Minister Juan Edghill. Speaking at an international forum, Edghill highlighted the country’s efforts to enhance its resilience against natural hazards such as flooding and rising sea levels.

Guyana, located on the northern coast of South America, is particularly vulnerable to climate-related challenges due to its low-lying coastal regions. The country is investing in upgrading its transportation infrastructure, including roads and sea defenses, to ensure they can endure extreme weather events. This includes improving drainage systems, stabilizing slopes, and raising embankments to safeguard vital transport links that support agriculture, tourism, trade, and access to essential services like healthcare and education.

Minister Edghill emphasized the importance of international collaboration and knowledge sharing to address these challenges effectively. He noted that Guyana’s geographic isolation and limited infrastructure pose significant hurdles, but the country is committed to creating sustainable and resilient transport systems. This includes promoting public transport, transitioning to renewable energy sources, and engaging local communities in decision-making processes.

Guyana’s Low-Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030 serves as a guiding framework for balancing economic growth with environmental protection. The strategy includes initiatives such as renewable energy expansion, forest conservation, and climate finance innovation. By prioritizing sustainable development, Guyana aims to ensure that its economic growth does not come at the expense of environmental sustainability.

The World Bank has also supported Guyana’s efforts through the Integrated Transport Corridors Project, which focuses on enhancing the country’s road network to make it safer and more resilient. This project is part of broader efforts to address the impacts of climate change and support Guyana’s rapid economic expansion.

As Guyana continues to develop its infrastructure, the focus remains on creating a resilient and sustainable future that can withstand the challenges posed by climate change. This includes leveraging regional strengths, sharing localized solutions, and building resilience through international cooperation.
