Govt Will Continue Agri Programme After USAID Funding Cut – Mustapha

    Published on

The Guyanese government has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing vital agricultural programs despite a potential cut in funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This decision was announced by Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha, emphasizing that agriculture remains a top priority for the government.

    Background on USAID Funding

USAID has been supporting agricultural initiatives in Guyana through programs like the Caribbean Agricultural Productivity Improvement Activity (CAPA). However, with the U.S. government’s recent cuts to foreign aid, funding for such programs is likely to be reduced. Despite this, Guyana is determined to integrate these initiatives into its national agriculture development plans.

    Government Commitment

Minister Mustapha stated that the government will not cease any viable agricultural programs. Instead, they plan to absorb and incorporate these initiatives into their existing agricultural development budget. This approach ensures that critical projects, such as those benefiting cherry farmers and other private sector partners, will continue uninterrupted.

    Impact on Agriculture Sector

Guyana’s agriculture sector is crucial for the country’s economy and food security. It provides employment for a significant portion of the population, particularly in rural areas. The government’s decision to maintain support for agricultural programs reflects its commitment to sustaining rural communities and ensuring the sector’s continued contribution to the national GDP.

    Future Plans

The government is focused on enhancing agricultural productivity and innovation. Recent initiatives include the development of sustainable farming models, such as hydroponics, and the expansion of non-traditional agriculture. These efforts aim to increase food production, improve food security, and promote entrepreneurship in the sector.

By continuing these programs, Guyana aims to achieve its goal of being self-sufficient in key crops by 2025 and to strengthen its position as a major agricultural producer within the CARICOM region. The government’s proactive stance on maintaining agricultural programs underscores its dedication to economic diversification and sustainable development.
