President Irfaan Ali has unveiled an ambitious plan to modernize Guyana’s security sector through significant investment in drone technology and artificial intelligence, aiming to enhance national safety, border protection, and crime prevention.
During his address marking Guyana’s 59th Independence Anniversary, President Ali emphasized that technology will be at the heart of the country’s security transformation. The government’s strategy includes deploying satellite, radar, and drone technology, along with AI-driven threat detection and intelligence analysis, to create a robust, modern security architecture. “The national security transformation will see technology driving our security architecture,” President Ali stated, highlighting the role of these tools in safeguarding Guyana’s people and resources.
The Guyana Police Force and Defence Force have already begun integrating drones into their operations through initiatives like “Eyes in the Sky,” which uses drones to boost security presence, especially in urban areas. This program complements broader efforts under the government’s ‘Safe Country’ initiative, which has already seen the installation of over 400 Intelligent Video Surveillance sites and plans for hundreds more in 2025.
In addition to urban crime prevention, President Ali underscored the importance of drone technology in strengthening border security. He affirmed that Guyana’s investments will focus on greater technological presence at its borders, alongside maritime, aerial, and terrestrial assets, to ensure the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The government is also rolling out digital solutions for traffic safety, digitized case management, and cyber resilience, all designed to make the security system more service-oriented and community-led. Training and capacity-building are integral to the plan, with government agencies participating in advanced drone training to optimize the use of this technology and foster inter-agency collaboration.
President Ali reassured the nation that these measures are not just about technology, but about empowering security personnel, building human capital, and leveraging regional partnerships to combat crime, particularly transnational threats. The government’s commitment, he said, is to defend Guyana with unwavering resolve, ensuring a safer, more secure environment for all citizens.
