In a bold move to fast-track national development, the government has approached Parliament for approval of a supplementary $57.5 billion to boost its ambitious housing programme and fund a series of critical development initiatives across the country.
The supplementary request, tabled on Friday, underscores the administration’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for affordable housing and improving infrastructure in both urban and rural communities. According to government officials, a significant portion of the funds will be allocated to the Ministry of Housing and Water, which is spearheading the construction of new homes, expansion of residential areas, and the upgrading of essential utilities.
Minister of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, emphasized that the additional funding is crucial to delivering on the government’s promise of providing 50,000 house lots by 2026. “This injection will allow us to accelerate the pace of land allocation, infrastructure development, and the construction of turnkey homes for low- and middle-income families,†she stated.
Beyond housing, the supplementary budget covers a range of development projects, including road construction, drainage and irrigation upgrades, and the expansion of health and educational facilities. The government also intends to invest in renewable energy projects and digital infrastructure, aiming to stimulate economic growth and improve the quality of life for citizens.
Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh highlighted the urgency of the request, noting that the rapid pace of national development requires flexible and responsive financing. “The government is committed to ensuring that no region is left behind as we modernize our economy and empower our people,†Dr. Singh said during his presentation to Parliament.
The supplementary request comes amid rising public demand for better housing and infrastructure, as well as calls from the private sector for improved investment conditions. Lawmakers are expected to debate the proposal in the coming week, with a vote anticipated before the end of the month.
If approved, the $57.5 billion injection is expected to create thousands of jobs, stimulate local businesses, and significantly advance the government’s development agenda. The administration has pledged full transparency and accountability in the disbursement of the funds, assuring citizens that every dollar will be used to build a stronger, more inclusive nation.
