Government Awards Contract for First Phase of $4B Parika Port Facility

    Published on

The government has awarded the contract for the first phase of the highly anticipated $4 billion Parika port facility, marking a major milestone in Guyana’s drive to modernize its maritime infrastructure and boost regional trade.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced the development during a community engagement at Hubu backlands, highlighting the transformative impact the new international port will have on Region Three (Essequibo Islands–West Demerara). The initial investment, equivalent to nearly US$20 million, will fund the construction of state-of-the-art cold storage, agro-processing, and packaging facilities designed to serve the region’s farmers and exporters.

“This facility at Parika will have a cold storage facility for the farmers, it will have agro-processing facility for the farmers, packing facility for the farmers,†President Ali told residents, emphasizing the government’s commitment to expanding market access across the Caribbean.

Alongside the port construction, preparations are underway for a new ferry service that will transport local produce directly to Caribbean markets, streamlining exports and opening new opportunities for Guyanese agriculture. The government is also investing in critical infrastructure such as drainage and irrigation, aiming to increase productivity, reduce transportation costs, and prepare farmers for entry into new markets.

The first phase of the Parika port project will focus on foundational works, including the construction of a concrete pile foundation, stelling deck superstructure, and river defense and land reclamation on both the northern and southern foreshores. The project was tendered in three lots, with bids received from more than 20 local contractors.

The Parika port facility is part of a broader regional development strategy that includes the Vreed-en-Hoop Shorebase, gas-to-energy projects, and the creation of industrial hubs and improved housing and road infrastructure. Once operational, the new port is expected to position Parika as a key gateway for trade and tourism, further accelerating economic growth in Region Three and beyond.

With the contract now awarded, construction is set to begin soon, ushering in a new era for Guyana’s river transport and export capabilities.
