Georgetown, Guyana – The Government of Guyana has announced a significant investment of $235 million to upgrade health centres across Georgetown, as part of its continued efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure and services for residents.
The initiative, unveiled on Monday, will focus on modernizing facilities, expanding service capacity, and improving accessibility for patients in urban areas. Health centres slated for upgrades will receive infrastructural improvements, new medical equipment, and enhanced amenities to better serve the growing population.
Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony emphasized the importance of the project during a press briefing, noting that it aligns with the government’s commitment to strengthening primary healthcare services. “This investment is about ensuring that every citizen has access to quality healthcare in their communities. These upgrades will allow us to deliver more efficient and comprehensive care,†he stated.
The upgrades will address longstanding challenges such as overcrowding, outdated equipment, and insufficient space for medical staff. Additionally, the initiative aims to support the delivery of specialized services such as maternal and child health programs, chronic disease management, and mental health counseling.
Residents have welcomed the announcement, with many expressing optimism about the potential improvements in healthcare delivery. “It’s good to see the government prioritizing health centres because they are critical for people who can’t afford private care,†said one Georgetown resident.
The project is expected to be completed within the next year, with contractors already mobilized to begin work at several locations. As Guyana continues its development trajectory, investments like these signal a commitment to improving essential services and ensuring equitable access to healthcare for all citizens.
