Government Addresses Linden Truckers’ Concerns Over Unfair Practices

    Published on

The government has moved swiftly to address mounting concerns from Linden truckers, who have been protesting alleged unfair practices and job losses attributed to increased competition from foreign companies, particularly Chinese and Trinidadian operators.

Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, met with truckers in Linden on Tuesday, directly addressing their grievances and providing reassurances that the government is committed to ensuring a level playing field in the sector. Truckers have voiced frustration over being displaced by lower-cost services from foreign competitors and claim to have faced discrimination during stone loading at the Arisaru quarry.

Minister Edghill categorically denied rumors that Chinese quarry investors had received duty-free trucks, clarifying that such concessions are limited strictly to operational equipment used within quarry sites. “The Chinese have received no duty-free trucks. What is happening here now is competition on the market in terms of price,” he stated.

To promote fairness and eliminate discrimination, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) has brokered an agreement with quarry operators to establish two separate loading lines—one for Guyanese truckers and one for Chinese operators. The Minister assured truckers that if these changes are not implemented, the government will intervene decisively.

Minister Edghill also addressed the issue of unregistered trucks operating with trade plates, warning that such vehicles would be seized and emphasizing that temporary permits from the Guyana Revenue Authority do not exempt operators from timely vehicle registration.

On the subject of declining haulage rates, the Minister acknowledged the truckers’ concerns but explained that the government cannot directly set prices in a competitive market. However, he assured that any evidence of price manipulation or gouging would be investigated by the Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission.

Truckers from across the region, including the East Bank, East Coast, and Linden, have been protesting for several days, citing a lack of representation and support as they struggle to compete with larger foreign companies dominating major contracts and road projects. Many say they are left to fend for themselves and have called on the government for urgent intervention.

Minister Edghill expressed empathy for the truckers, pledging to ensure they can support their families with dignity. He also cautioned against blocking roadways, warning that while peaceful protest is allowed, further disruptions could have consequences.

As dialogue continues, the government has reiterated its commitment to addressing the concerns of local truckers and ensuring fairness and opportunity for all operators in the industry.
