Amid escalating tensions along Guyana’s western border, Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Brigadier Omar Khan, has issued a stern warning that no breach of Guyana’s sovereignty will be tolerated. His statement comes in the wake of recent armed attacks on GDF patrols by gunmen believed to be operating from the Venezuelan side of the Cuyuni River.
Brigadier Khan, addressing the nation during a press briefing at GDF Headquarters, reaffirmed the Defence Force’s unwavering commitment to the protection of Guyana’s territorial integrity. “Let me be clear: any attempt to violate Guyana’s borders or threaten our people will be met with the full force of the Defence Force. No breach of our sovereignty will be tolerated,†he declared.
The GDF Chief’s comments follow a series of incidents in which GDF ranks came under fire while conducting routine patrols in the Eteringbang-Makapa area. Although there were no injuries reported, the attacks have heightened concerns about the safety of Guyanese troops and the stability of the border region.
Brigadier Khan emphasized that the GDF remains on high alert and is fully prepared to respond to any provocation. He called for calm and assured citizens that the Defence Force is working closely with the government and international partners to monitor the situation and deter further aggression.
“These attacks are not just acts of violence against our soldiers-they are direct challenges to our nation’s sovereignty and peace,†Khan stated. “We have already taken steps to reinforce our patrols, enhance intelligence gathering, and strengthen our presence in all vulnerable areas.â€
The GDF Chief also welcomed the government’s diplomatic efforts, including the recent formal protest note sent to Venezuela, and stressed the importance of international support in upholding Guyana’s rights under international law.
As the border controversy with Venezuela continues to unfold, Brigadier Khan’s message resonates as both a reassurance to the Guyanese public and a clear signal to external actors: Guyana stands resolute in defending its borders and will not permit any encroachment on its sovereignty.
