ExxonMobil Commits to Collaborative Gas Market Development in Guyana

    Published on

ExxonMobil has reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with Guyana in developing a robust market for natural gas, signaling a new chapter in the country’s energy landscape. This pledge comes as part of the company’s broader strategy to expand its natural gas operations in the South American nation.

At the heart of this initiative is the “Wales Gas Vision” project, unveiled by ExxonMobil’s Guyana head, Alistair Routledge, at the recent Guyana Energy Conference. The project aims to leverage a $1 billion pipeline completed in 2024 to supply gas for various petrochemical and power projects.

Key aspects of ExxonMobil’s gas development plans include:

    1. Increased gas production: The company plans to ramp up gas output, particularly through projects like Longtail, which could yield up to 1.2 billion cubic feet per day of gas.
    2. Diversified utilization: The gas will be used for power generation, natural gas liquids production, and manufacturing of fertilizers and alumina.
    3. LNG potential: ExxonMobil is exploring options for liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, potentially opening Guyana to global gas markets.
    4. Infrastructure development: Plans include separate pipelines and an offshore gas processing and LNG facility.

The Guyanese government will receive a portion of the gas from ExxonMobil’s Stabroek Block for its Gas-to-Energy project, aimed at reducing domestic power costs and emissions.

This collaborative approach between ExxonMobil and the Guyanese government aligns with the country’s ambition to diversify its energy mix and capitalize on its natural resources. As Guyana prepares to launch its national gas strategy in 2025, this partnership could play a crucial role in shaping the country’s energy future and economic development.
