‘Establish evacuation routes, identify potential risks early’ – GGMC urges miners as heavy rainfall persists

    Published on

The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) are urging all small-scale mining operators and site managers to exercise extreme vigilance amid this period of heavy rainfall.

In a notice to stakeholders published on Tuesday, the ministry and GGMC explained that “rising water levels in river basins and tributaries pose a significant threat to pit stability, equipment safety, and personnel welfare.”

In this regard, miners were urged to ensure they monitor weather conditions and stay informed about weather alerts and warnings in their respective area.

Additionally, they were encouraged to secure all mining equipment and materials to prevent damage from rising waters.

Miners were also informed to create emergency plants, establish evacuation routes and safety protocols in case of unexpected flooding. They were also urged to check worksites regularly, monitor water levels and identify potential risks early to avoid hazardous conditions.

Moreover, miners were encouraged to follow local authority guidelines and adhere to any advisories or instructions provided by local emergency services.

“The safety and well-being of all miners is our highest priority. We urge you to take the necessary precautions and remain vigilant,” the ministry and GGMC said.
