Residents across the Essequibo Coast turned out in force this weekend, joining hands with local authorities and private sector partners as Region Two launched a sweeping clean-up drive as part of Guyana’s nationwide campaign for a cleaner, healthier environment.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Region Two Regional Democratic Council (RDC) in collaboration with the Anna Regina Town Council, Neighbourhood Democratic Councils, the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, Water Users Associations, and the Essequibo Chamber of Commerce and Industry, saw enthusiastic participation from all corners of the community. Volunteers, regional officials, and private sector representatives gathered in key areas including Anna Regina, Charity, Suddie, and Supenaam, working side by side to clear garbage, beautify public spaces, and restore pride in their surroundings.

Regional Chairperson Vilma De Silva praised the turnout and the spirit of cooperation, calling the clean-up exercise “very successful throughout the region.” She noted that the campaign is part of a broader national effort launched by President Irfaan Ali, aimed at promoting a cleaner and healthier Guyana as the country continues to develop.

“A cleaner environment will help us reduce sickness and diseases that result from untidy surroundings,” De Silva said, emphasizing the public health benefits of the campaign.

The clean-up effort was bolstered by mechanical support, with mini-excavators clearing trenches and tractors transporting garbage to designated dump sites. Organizers also reminded the public that littering is a punishable offense and called on hire car and minibus drivers to carry garbage bags in their vehicles, providing passengers with a responsible way to dispose of waste.

De Silva expressed gratitude to all who participated and encouraged residents to maintain the momentum, stressing that keeping Essequibo clean is a shared responsibility that extends beyond the campaign itself.

As the clean-up campaign continues, Essequibo stands as a model of community spirit and civic pride, demonstrating the power of collective action in building a healthier, more beautiful Guyana.
