The Essequibo Coast has reached a significant milestone in public health and infrastructure, with 87% of its population now having access to clean, treated water. This achievement marks a major step forward in the government’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life for residents across the region.
The announcement was made by officials from the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), who attributed the progress to a series of targeted investments in water treatment plants, upgraded distribution networks, and community outreach programs. Over the past two years, the region has seen the commissioning of new facilities and the rehabilitation of existing ones, ensuring that more households and businesses receive safe, potable water.
“Access to clean water is fundamental to health, education, and economic development,†said a GWI spokesperson. “We are proud to report that the Essequibo Coast is now among the leading regions in Guyana for treated water coverage.â€
Residents have welcomed the improvements, noting a reduction in waterborne illnesses and greater convenience in daily life. Schools, health centers, and local businesses have also benefited from the enhanced supply, supporting broader community well-being.
Government officials have pledged to continue working towards universal access, with plans to expand infrastructure to the remaining underserved areas. The ultimate goal is to ensure that every citizen, regardless of location, enjoys reliable access to safe and treated water.
The progress on the Essequibo Coast stands as a testament to the impact of sustained investment and community partnership in building a healthier, more resilient region.
