Empowering Guyana’s Youth: PPP/C Gov’t Expands Free Education, Skills Training

    Published on

The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Guyana’s youth through an expansive program of free education and skills training. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities necessary to drive national development and prosperity.

    Free Education Initiative

The government has made significant strides in providing free education from nursery to university levels. Starting January 2025, tuition fees at the University of Guyana have been abolished, benefiting over 11,000 current students and all incoming students. This move aligns with the PPP/C’s 2020 manifesto promise to make tertiary education free, aiming to enhance human capital and ensure that no one is left behind due to financial constraints.

    Skills Training Programs

In addition to academic education, the government has expanded technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programs. Institutions like the Carnegie School of Home Economics and the Government Technical Institute offer courses in areas such as electrical installation, carpentry, and hospitality. The Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) program provides training in skilled trades like plumbing, masonry, and welding, with a strong focus on practical experience through community projects.

Participants in these programs receive comprehensive support, including safety equipment, meals, and a monthly stipend. Upon completion, they are provided with toolkits and, in some cases, small welding plants. The government’s partnership with the private sector has also facilitated job placements for graduates, ensuring a smooth transition into the workforce.

    Impact and Future Prospects

Since the relaunch of these programs, over 350 young people have been trained, with notable success in completing community projects that improve infrastructure across Guyana. The government’s aggressive scholarship program allows anyone aged 16 and older to pursue higher degrees, including master’s and PhDs, without financial burden.

This holistic approach to youth empowerment not only addresses immediate needs but also positions Guyana for long-term economic growth and social development. By investing in education and skills training, the PPP/C government is fostering a generation of young people equipped to lead the nation into a prosperous future.
