The Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) is set to introduce a series of specialised secondary-level training programmes for the first time, marking another milestone in the modernisation of Guyana’s teacher education system.

Minister of Education Sonia Parag made the announcement last Friday during CPCE’s 92nd graduation ceremony, where 1,345 new teachers received their certification at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

The new subject-specific programmes will include Geography, History, Chemistry, Physics, French, Portuguese, and Health and Family Life Education. A one-year Guidance and Counselling course will also be launched, alongside a six-week programme designed for parents of children with special needs — a move Parag described as an important step toward inclusive education.

“These initiatives reflect our commitment to achieving world-class education,” Minister Parag told graduates. “All of you will be part of that dream and that vision of His Excellency.”

Founded in 1928 as the Government Training College for Teachers, CPCE has long stood at the heart of Guyana’s education system. It was later renamed in honour of Cyril Potter, the distinguished educator and composer of the national anthem, and has since expanded from a single campus in Georgetown to multiple centres across the country.

For nearly a century, the college has shaped the teaching profession, producing generations of educators dedicated to raising national education standards.
