Boosting Regional Connectivity: Government’s Initiative for Local Aviation in the Caribbean and South America

    Published on

Guyana is on the brink of becoming a vital aviation hub, connecting the Caribbean and South America, as the government ramps up efforts to develop its domestic and international air transport sector. This commitment was articulated by Public Works Minister Bishop Juan Edghill during the 4th Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS) 2025 in Abu Dhabi. He shared the country’s ambitious vision for aviation growth, emphasizing its necessity due to Guyana’s unique geographical challenges and economic goals.

Minister Edghill pointed out that the aviation sector is experiencing unprecedented growth, with international passenger traffic projected to exceed one million by 2025—an impressive increase from 751,631 in 2019 to an anticipated 938,715 in 2024. This surge reflects growing investor confidence, increased travel from the diaspora, and a rising influx of business and leisure visitors, solidifying Guyana’s position as an emerging regional hub.

He remarked, “Our eco-tourism, highlighted by our vast forests and natural beauty, has made Guyana a must-visit destination according to numerous international travel journals. Aviation is essential for the development of this sector.” He noted that by the end of 2024, the number of arrivals in Guyana would surpass the country’s population, thanks to the attraction of several international carriers.

Minister Edghill stressed the critical role of aviation in the country’s survival and its strategic location as a link between the Caribbean and South America. He stated, “To develop our aviation sector, we must enhance existing infrastructure and ensure it operates efficiently.”

As Guyana solidifies its role as a key connector, the government is focused on modernizing aviation infrastructure. Plans are underway to improve both domestic and international connectivity, boost trade and tourism, and ensure that remote communities are integrated into national development efforts.

“To see the development of Guyana and improve the livelihoods of our people, we must build a robust domestic aviation sector. With over 120 aerodromes needed to serve more than 242 indigenous communities, and with the burgeoning oil and gas industry necessitating helicopter services for FPSOs located a hundred miles off our coast, our future relies on aviation,” he explained.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of investing in safety, training, and infrastructure. Recent certification of aviation training programs is part of ensuring that Guyana’s skies remain secure and well-regulated.

Guyana has made significant strides in aviation safety, receiving support from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). In May-June 2024, ICAO conducted an audit under the Universal Safety Oversight Audit-Continuous Monitoring Approach (USOAP-CMA), achieving an overall score of 66.36% in the effective implementation of ICAO standards. This endorsement has helped position Guyana as a safe aviation destination, leading to four new air carriers, including United Airlines, beginning operations in 2024.

Furthermore, the government is in the process of certifying its first heavy-lift helicopter operator to support the oil and gas sector, collaborating with the ICAO Regional office and other states to enhance local capacity and oversight for this operator.
