The Board of Industrial Training (BIT), operating under the Ministry of Labour, marked a major milestone this week as it celebrated 115 years of advancing technical education and workforce development in Guyana. The anniversary was commemorated with a special ceremony attended by government officials, industry partners, alumni, and current trainees.
Established in 1910, BIT has played a pivotal role in shaping Guyana’s skilled workforce, adapting over the decades to meet the evolving needs of the nation’s industries. From its early days providing basic trade instruction, the Board has grown into a modern institution offering a wide range of technical and vocational programs in fields such as welding, electrical installation, information technology, and heavy-duty equipment operation.
Minister of Labour, Hon. Joseph Hamilton, praised BIT’s enduring legacy in his keynote address. “For more than a century, the Board of Industrial Training has been the backbone of Guyana’s industrial and economic progress. Its commitment to empowering young people and upskilling our workforce remains as strong as ever,” he said.
The anniversary celebration highlighted BIT’s recent achievements, including the expansion of training centers across the country and the introduction of new programs aligned with emerging sectors such as oil and gas, renewable energy, and information technology. These initiatives are designed to ensure that Guyanese workers remain competitive in both local and global markets.
Alumni shared inspiring stories of how BIT’s training programs transformed their lives, enabling them to secure meaningful employment and contribute to national development. Many credited their success to the hands-on training and strong industry partnerships that are hallmarks of the Board’s approach.
BIT Chairman, David Armogan, emphasized the institution’s forward-looking vision. “As we celebrate our rich history, we are also focused on the future—expanding access to technical education, embracing innovation, and fostering partnerships that will drive Guyana’s continued growth,” he said.
The event concluded with the presentation of awards to outstanding trainees, instructors, and industry partners, recognizing their dedication and contributions to BIT’s mission.
