Another 1,500 House Lots to Be Allocated in Region Six

    Published on

The government has announced the allocation of an additional 1,500 house lots in Region Six, East Berbice-Corentyne, as part of its ongoing drive to expand homeownership and address the backlog of housing applications in the region.

This new phase of allocations, taking place over a two-day “Dream Realised†event in New Amsterdam, will benefit residents seeking land in the rapidly developing housing areas of Providence and Glasgow. The initiative is designed to tackle the region’s backlog of approximately 6,200 pending applications, with officials promising that all applications submitted by December 31, 2024, will be addressed within this year.

Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible applicant receives their allocation letter and that infrastructure works for the new housing areas will be completed in 2025. He highlighted that since 2020, over 4,500 house lots have already been distributed in Region Six, contributing to the nationwide total of more than 45,000 allocations under the current administration.

In addition to the distribution of house lots, more than 170 residents will receive their certificates of title, granting them legal ownership of their land in areas such as Glasgow, Ordinance Fortlands, Plantation Mount Sinai, Williamsburg, and Bloomfield. The government is also providing steel and cement vouchers valued at a total of $5 million to support new homeowners in constructing their houses.

Significant investments have been made to support this housing expansion, with $16.3 billion injected into infrastructure development across several communities, including Number 75 and 76 Villages, Palmyra, Moleson Creek, and Hogstye. These upgrades are aimed at ensuring that new homeowners have access to essential amenities and services.

Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, noted that the government’s housing programme is not only about numbers but about transforming lives. She underscored the life-changing impact of homeownership, particularly for first-time landowners, and reaffirmed the administration’s goal to surpass its target of 50,000 house lots by the end of its term.

The latest allocation in Region Six reflects the government’s broader strategy to foster economic growth, generational wealth, and stability for families across Guyana, while also regularizing informal settlements and supporting the development of new communities.
