Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) Chairman Daniel Seeram has declared he will serve out his full term, despite his recent and highly publicized break from the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and endorsement of the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) ahead of Guyana’s 2025 general and regional elections.

Seeram, who was appointed in 2020 following the last elections, made headlines this week when he announced his support for President Irfaan Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, stating that after “fruitful discussions and careful considerations on matters of National and Regional development,” he was backing the PPP/C for a second term. His move marks one of the latest high-profile defections from the main opposition, the People’s National Congress (PNC), which leads the APNU coalition.

In an exclusive interview, Seeram made it clear he has no intention of resigning from his post as Chairman. “As Chair, I will not be resigning. I will serve until the end of my tenure, until a new Chairperson is elected and sworn in,” he stated.

Reflecting on his tenure, Seeram highlighted achievements in education and infrastructure under his leadership, including the construction of four new schools and ongoing partnerships with the Ministry of Education and the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA). He emphasized the region’s proactive efforts to improve education delivery and address flooding through better maintenance of drains and pumps.

Seeram also acknowledged the pivotal role of Central Government in facilitating these developments, expressing confidence that a re-elected PPP/C government would continue to prioritize regional progress.

His endorsement comes at a time of shifting political alliances, with other prominent figures—including Shazaam Ally, a founding member of The Citizenship Initiative—also joining the PPP/C ahead of the September 1 elections. The opposition, meanwhile, faces challenges in coalition-building and internal unity as the campaign season intensifies.

Seeram, a former Guyana Defence Force captain, is now the second high-profile figure to publicly endorse the PPP/C since the election date was announced. His decision underscores the evolving political landscape and the growing influence of the ruling party as Guyana prepares for a pivotal vote.
