The community of Charity on the Essequibo Coast celebrated a historic milestone this week with the official opening of a state-of-the-art Children’s Court, a project valued at $72 million. The new facility is designed to provide a safe, supportive environment for children and young people who come into contact with the justice system.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, government officials, judicial officers, and community leaders hailed the court as a major step forward in protecting the rights and welfare of minors. The Children’s Court is equipped with child-friendly interview rooms, private waiting areas, and modern technology to ensure sensitive handling of cases involving juveniles.
“This court represents our commitment to upholding the rights of every child and ensuring that justice is delivered with compassion and understanding,” said one senior judicial official. “We are creating a space where children can be heard and treated with dignity, no matter their circumstances.”
The facility will handle a range of matters involving children, including child protection cases, juvenile offenses, and family disputes. Specially trained magistrates and staff will oversee proceedings, with a focus on rehabilitation and restorative justice rather than punishment.
Parents, teachers, and social workers in the region have welcomed the new court, noting that it brings essential services closer to families in Essequibo and reduces the need to travel long distances for hearings.
The opening of the Charity Children’s Court is part of a broader national initiative to modernize the justice system and ensure that vulnerable groups—especially children—receive fair, timely, and appropriate treatment under the law. As the court begins its work, stakeholders are optimistic that it will set a new standard for juvenile justice in Guyana.
