$702 Million Invested to Upgrade Roads at Port Kaituma

    Published on

The government of Guyana has announced a fresh investment of $702 million to upgrade critical road infrastructure at Port Kaituma, signaling a major boost for transportation and development in this remote Region One community.

This significant capital injection aims to address long-standing concerns about road conditions in Port Kaituma, a gateway to Guyana’s hinterland and a crucial hub for both commercial and social activity. The latest funding is part of a broader, multi-year push to modernize and expand infrastructure in the Barima-Waini region.

Local authorities confirm that the upgrade will cover key routes connecting neighborhoods, public facilities, and business areas. Previous phases of construction focused on converting dirt tracks into durable concrete roads—dramatically improving travel reliability and access to vital services for residents, miners, and traders.

The road works are not just about paving pathways; they have created meaningful employment for community members and local contractors. From the hands that mix concrete to onsite project supervisors, the upgrades have generated jobs and injected cash into the local economy, offering relief for families and small businesses alike.

Officials from the Ministry of Public Works emphasize that these investments will deliver long-term benefits. Upgraded roads will improve connectivity between Port Kaituma and neighboring areas, reduce vehicle maintenance costs due to smoother surfaces, and cut transit times for goods and emergency services. Community leaders agree that the changes bring new optimism and are likely to attract further development and business opportunities.

Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill, during a recent visit to Port Kaituma, reaffirmed the government’s commitment: “Every dollar spent on these roads is an investment in safer journeys, economic opportunity, and the dignity of our hinterland communities.”

Residents have welcomed the improvements, after years of navigating rough, muddy roads—especially during the rainy season. The $702 million investment is expected to accelerate completion timelines of ongoing projects, with several new roads slated to open before the end of the year.

As the works progress, Port Kaituma stands as a testament to the transformative impact that infrastructure investment can have—turning once-isolated villages into growing, connected communities ready to seize new opportunities.
