600kW Solar Plant at Leguan to Become Operational in May 2025

    Published on

Guyana is set to achieve another milestone in its renewable energy journey as the 600-kilowatt solar plant on Leguan Island is scheduled to become operational by the end of May 2025. The project, financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and executed by the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), promises to significantly enhance electricity supply on the island while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips recently visited Leguan Island to inspect the progress of the solar plant and expressed optimism about its transformative impact. During his address to residents, he highlighted how the facility would increase power availability and support the island’s growth in areas such as industry, commerce, and tourism. Phillips also encouraged local businesses and agricultural enterprises to leverage the improved energy supply for economic development.

The solar plant features cutting-edge components, including solar panels for energy capture, inverters for converting direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC), and transformers for regulating power distribution. Additionally, it includes a 1,200-kilowatt battery energy storage system designed to provide reliable power during designated hours. The system is expected to have a lifespan of 20 years and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 800 tons annually, aligning with Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030.

Dr. Mahender Sharma, CEO of the GEA, emphasized the environmental benefits of transitioning from diesel-powered generators to renewable energy sources. Currently, Leguan operates at a peak demand of 450 kilowatts using heavy fuel oil (HFO). With the addition of the solar farm, energy production will exceed current demand, ensuring greater reliability and sustainability.

The US$1.785 million project represents a key step in Guyana’s broader renewable energy strategy, which includes solar farms, wind energy projects, and hydropower initiatives across various regions. As Leguan prepares for this new era of clean energy, residents and stakeholders alike are optimistic about its potential to drive economic growth while contributing to global climate goals.
