The Natural Resources Ministry has announced the rollout of a new “Troy-like†land allocation model aimed at expanding access to mining lands for small-scale Guyanese miners while strengthening compliance and transparency in the gold mining subsector. The initiative follows the model implemented in the Issano 14 Mile area, formerly associated with Troy Resources. After the closure of that operation, a portion of the licence area was subdivided into 27-acre parcels and allocated to small miners under a structured arrangement. Nearly 100 small miners are currently operating in the area, particularly benefiting miners in Regions Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and Eight (Potaro-Siparuni). Through the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), the Ministry will open similar areas in Region One (Mabaruma/Matthews Ridge sub-district), Region Seven and Region Eight. Within the next two to three months at least 75 parcels will be made available in each region, resulting in approximately 225 allocations for small Guyanese miners. Under the new model, parcel sizes will increase from 27 acres to 50 acres per miner. Beneficiaries will have the option to relinquish their allocation once mined out and apply for another 50-acre parcel. To support more informed land allocation, the Government has engaged United States (US)-based company Global Venturing to conduct mineral processing and data collection across mining districts. The aerial surveys, which are nearing completion are expected to provide geological data to guide allocations, reduce prospecting costs for small miners, minimise environmental impact and improve efficiency within the sector.

    Mobile purchasing units
In addition, the Guyana Gold Board (GGB) will introduce mobile purchasing units to improve access for miners operating in remote locations. The Ministry reiterated that all gold produced in Guyana must be sold to the GGB or a licensed buyer, in keeping with the law. The announcement comes as the mining officials maintain a zero-tolerance approach to illegal mining. Since intensified enforcement operations began in recent months, more than 400 pieces of equipment, including engines, pumps, generators and excavators, have been seized in joint exercises conducted by the GGMC and the Guyana Police Force (GPF). Nearly 100 individuals have been prosecuted, with additional matters pending before the courts. According to the Ministry, the enforcement measures are intended to ensure compliance, protect the integrity of the industry and secure fair returns for the country. It reaffirmed its commitment to working with small and medium-scale miners to promote a transparent and sustainable gold mining sector.
