Two hundred residents of Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) are currently participating in skills training programs designed to enhance their employability and open new job opportunities. This initiative, spearheaded by the Board of Industrial Training (BIT), is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to address unemployment and boost workforce development in the region.
The training programs focus on equipping participants with practical skills in high-demand areas such as welding, heavy-duty equipment operation, electrical installation, and general office administration. These courses are tailored to meet the needs of industries operating in Region Seven, including mining, construction, and agriculture.
Empowering Communities Through Training
Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton emphasized that these programs are crucial for fostering economic growth and improving livelihoods. “We are committed to ensuring that every region has access to training opportunities that prepare residents for meaningful employment,” he said during a recent visit to Bartica.
Participants in the program receive not only technical training but also safety gear and essential resources to support their learning. The initiative also includes hands-on apprenticeships with local businesses, ensuring that trainees gain practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge.
Job Creation in Region Seven
Region Seven is poised for significant economic activity with the planned operation of two large-scale mines later this year. These projects are expected to create over 700 permanent jobs during their operational phase and require more than 1,500 workers during construction. To meet this demand, mining companies are collaborating with BIT to provide specialized training for prospective employees.
Additionally, discussions are underway to establish a call center in Bartica, which could generate further employment opportunities for residents. The government has also invested heavily in infrastructure development within the region, spending over $13 billion to improve roads, healthcare facilities, and other essential services.
A Pathway to Regional Development
This skills training initiative aligns with Guyana’s broader strategy to empower hinterland communities and integrate them into the national economy. By equipping residents with marketable skills, the government aims to reduce unemployment while fostering self-sufficiency and economic resilience in Region Seven.
For the 200 participants currently enrolled, these programs represent a gateway to stable employment and a brighter future for their families and communities. As these efforts continue, Region Seven is set to become a hub of skilled labor and economic opportunity.
