ERC Calls for Unity and Respect Amid Controversy Over Shiva Murti Remarks

    Published on

Statement from the Ethnic Relations Commission:

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) of Guyana has expressed deep concern regarding the rise of religious intolerance manifesting on social media platforms in relation to the recent inauguration of the Shiva Murti on the Essequibo Coast. The ERC strongly asserts that fostering respect and understanding among various religious groups is crucial for sustaining national unity and social harmony.

Through its Media Monitoring Unit, the ERC has identified a significant number of intolerant comments in response to posts about the Shiva Murti. In response, the Commission has issued multiple warnings to those making such intolerant statements. However, with the increasing volume of negative and provocative comments, the ERC calls on all Guyanese to practice mutual respect and uphold the values of religious freedom as enshrined in our Constitution.

Guyana stands as a proud multi-ethnic and multicultural nation, where religious diversity is a key aspect of our national identity. The majority of our citizens engage in and honor each other’s religious observances, exemplifying a model of religious harmony that serves as an inspiration worldwide.

The ERC strongly advises against any actions or comments that could threaten one of Guyana’s most significant assets—our religious unity. It is essential that we resist divisive language that could disrupt the longstanding peaceful coexistence within our nation.

In this context, the ERC encourages all citizens to show respect towards our Hindu community as they celebrate the historic inauguration of this sacred symbol in their faith. Let us continue to cultivate an atmosphere where all religious beliefs are respected, and where mutual understanding and respect characterize our national dialogue.

The ERC remains dedicated to promoting peace and good relations across Guyana. We invite all Guyanese to participate in this essential initiative, ensuring that our country continues to shine as a symbol of unity, tolerance, and peace.
