Empowering Men: BRAVE Initiative Promotes Gender Equality in Guyana

    Published on

Male staff from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security are now poised to bring their training into communities throughout the nation, following a rigorous series of workshops under the BRAVE Programme. This innovative initiative is designed to transform the way men and boys engage with issues related to gender equality and the prevention of violence.

BRAVE, which stands for BUILD your legacy, RECLAIM manhood, ACTIVATE goals, VISUALISE success, and EXECUTE fearlessly, was launched as part of the Ministry’s comprehensive Men’s Policy in June. The initiative addresses gender-based violence by engaging men and boys not merely as potential offenders but as essential allies in the fight against abuse, fostering healthy and respectful relationships.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, has emphasized the significance of involving men and boys in meaningful discussions and actions that tackle the underlying causes of gender-based violence. The BRAVE Programme embodies this commitment by providing male Ministry staff with essential tools, knowledge, and confidence to train peers and young men within their communities across Guyana.

By prioritizing legacy-building, personal accountability, and goal-setting, BRAVE aspires to promote positive masculinity and empower participants to serve as role models of respect and responsibility. Additionally, the programme encourages healing and fosters open dialogue about issues that men and boys frequently endure in silence, establishing safe spaces for conversations on mental health, conflict resolution, and healthy relationships.

With this newly trained group of male facilitators, the Ministry intends to implement community-based sessions and mentorship opportunities nationwide in the upcoming months. The objective is to engage boys and men in schools, workplaces, and communities, motivating them to become part of a broader movement aimed at eradicating gender-based violence and creating safer, more equitable homes and communities for all Guyanese.
