The Small Business Bureau (SBB) is dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship within Amerindian communities. A team spearheaded by SBB’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Shazim Ibrahim, is currently working with residents in the Upper Mazaruni region of Region Seven. Their efforts include conducting needs assessments and providing business management training.
This week, CEO Shazim Ibrahim and his team held discussions with the communities of Kamarang Warawatta and Kako. The primary objective of these engagements is to uncover sustainable economic opportunities that can stimulate business growth and promote long-term development. The residents expressed a keen interest in sectors like aquaculture and apiculture, which they believe could create jobs, increase income, and support self-sustainability.
During the training sessions, facilitators emphasized essential business concepts such as the significance of a solid business plan, effective inventory management, and strategies for marketing and financial risk management. To date, the SBB has engaged with 20 different communities, with a significant portion of participants being women and youth—groups that stand to gain immensely from this initiative.
In the context of the 2025 budget discussions, Dr. Ashni Singh, Senior Minister in the Office of the President responsible for Finance and the Public Service, highlighted the crucial role that small businesses play in improving the livelihoods of citizens. He noted that the government is committed to implementing initiatives aimed at establishing business incubators and comprehensive training and mentorship programs to nurture entrepreneurship.
This initiative is part of the government’s broader goal to enhance community development through innovative and sustainable projects that contribute to long-term economic growth.
