A 26-year-old resident of West Canje, Berbice, has been formally charged with murder following the violent death of 56-year-old Dhanindranauth Surujnauth Mahadeo. The accused, Ravi Henry, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on Friday and was not required to enter a plea to the capital offence. He has been remanded to prison pending further proceedings.
The case stems from a disturbing incident that unfolded earlier this month. Mahadeo, a resident of Caracas Vryheid Village, was reported missing after he failed to return home from visiting a friend. Two days later, police were alerted to the discovery of a decomposed body in a swampy area of Vryheid Village. An autopsy revealed that Mahadeo died from multiple injuries, including a fractured skull and a deep cut to his finger.
Investigators quickly zeroed in on Henry, who was taken into custody and later confessed to the crime. According to police, Henry admitted to striking Mahadeo multiple times with a piece of iron after an argument erupted between the two men. He reportedly continued the assault until Mahadeo lost consciousness.
The gruesome nature of the killing has sent shockwaves through the West Canje community. Residents have expressed concern over rising violence and are calling for increased police presence in the area. The case has been adjourned as the investigation continues, with authorities vowing to pursue justice for Mahadeo and his family.
