Two residents of Plantation Ross, West Coast Berbice, were remanded to prison on Tuesday after being charged with terrorism in connection with a recent incident that saw the Ross Public Road blocked with wood and other debris.
Jamal Johnson, 27, a construction worker, and Felicia Ceres, 36, a domestic worker, appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court. The court heard that on April 29, Johnson and Ceres, along with several others, allegedly engaged in acts intended to incite terror by obstructing the public roadway in Region Five.
During the proceedings, Police Prosecutor Sergeant Garfield Edwards objected to bail, citing the defendants’ failure to report to the Weldaad Magistrate’s Court after being granted station bail the previous week. The magistrate subsequently ordered that both Johnson and Ceres be remanded to prison.
Neither defendant was required to enter a plea at this stage. The case has been transferred to the Weldaad Magistrate’s Court, with the next hearing scheduled for June 13, 2025.
The charges come amid heightened national scrutiny of public disorder and terrorism-related offences, with law enforcement reiterating a zero-tolerance policy for actions that threaten public safety and order. The incident has sparked concern in the West Berbice community, where residents are calling for calm and urging all parties to respect the rule of law as the legal process continues.
