Wakenaam Sailor Fined for Cocaine Possession

    Published on

A sailor from Wakenaam was fined $30,000 after pleading guilty to possession of a small quantity of cocaine, highlighting ongoing efforts by law enforcement to curb drug-related offenses in the region.

Lakeram Mahindranauth, also known as ‘Vishan’, 42, of Lot 108 Maria’s Pleasure, Wakenaam, Essequibo River, appeared before Magistrate Tamieka Clarke at the Charity Magistrate’s Court on Monday, April 14, 2025. The charge stemmed from his possession of 0.81 gram of cocaine, a quantity well below the threshold that would trigger more severe trafficking charges.

Mahindranauth admitted to the offense and was subsequently fined $30,000. Should he fail to pay the fine, he faces a default sentence of one month’s imprisonment.

The case underscores the strict penalties in place for narcotics possession in Guyana, even for small amounts. While the law prescribes mandatory prison sentences for larger quantities, courts retain discretion to impose fines and short custodial sentences for lesser offenses, particularly when the amount involved is minimal and the accused pleads guilty.

Authorities continue to warn the public about the legal risks associated with drug possession, reiterating that even minor infractions can result in significant financial penalties or jail time.
