Two Security Guards Remanded on Murder Charge in Georgetown

    Published on

Two security guards were remanded to prison on Friday following their appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where they faced a murder charge in connection with the death of Leon Alexander Bartrum. The incident, which unfolded at the intersection of Croal and Longden Streets, has shocked the local community and raised concerns about violence in the city’s center.

The accused, Kennard Persaud, 36, of Water Street, Tiger Bay Squatting Area, and Rickey Andrews, 32, of Lane Avenue, West Front Road, stood before Magistrate Fabayo Azore. Persaud appeared virtually, while Andrews was present in person. Neither had legal representation during the proceedings. The court heard that the charge stemmed from a late-night altercation on March 6, 2025, during which Bartrum sustained severe injuries.

According to the prosecution, Persaud and Andrews, who were reportedly friends with Bartrum, were standing at the street corner when Bartrum approached. An argument escalated into violence, with Persaud allegedly drawing a cutlass from his electric bike and delivering several blows to Bartrum’s head and body. Bartrum, also armed with a cutlass, retaliated and wounded Persaud. Andrews is accused of joining the fray, striking Bartrum multiple times with a piece of wood.

After the attack, Bartrum managed to walk to Charlotte Street and Avenue of the Republic, where he collapsed. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and admitted in serious condition. Persaud was initially charged with attempted murder, but after Bartrum succumbed to his injuries on April 25, the charge was upgraded to murder. Andrews was subsequently arrested.

During police interviews, both men reportedly admitted to their roles in the incident. However, in court, both pleaded their innocence. Andrews, visibly emotional, insisted he had only tried to intervene and did not intend harm. Persaud took full responsibility for the attack, asserting that Andrews was not involved in the violence.

Despite their statements, Magistrate Azore remanded both men to prison. The case has been adjourned to June 13, 2025, as the court awaits the post-mortem results and further advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions. The proceedings continue to draw public attention as the community seeks answers and justice for the tragic loss of Leon Alexander Bartrum.
