Two Miners Charged with Murder in Cuyuni River, Region Seven

    Published on

Two miners have been formally charged with murder following a deadly altercation in the remote Cuyuni River area of Region Seven, sending shockwaves through the mining community.

The accused, identified as 29-year-old Mark Phillips and 34-year-old Devon James, appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court earlier this week. They are accused of fatally stabbing fellow miner Samuel Peters, 38, during a dispute at a mining camp along the Cuyuni River.

According to police reports, the incident occurred late last Friday night when a heated argument between the men escalated into violence. Witnesses say the confrontation quickly turned physical, resulting in Peters sustaining multiple stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.

Phillips and James were arrested shortly after the incident and have since been remanded to prison pending further investigations. The case has drawn attention to ongoing tensions and safety concerns within Guyana’s interior mining regions, where disputes over claims and resources can sometimes turn deadly.

The matter has been adjourned until later this month as police continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses. The authorities have renewed calls for miners to resolve conflicts peacefully and for increased security measures in the nation’s gold-producing districts.
